Audiology Department

The Audiological Department has grown this year with the addition of a new audiologist, Mr Neeraj Kumar.

Over the years, we have tested the growing numbers of children in our early intervention Programme, Preschool, Primary schools, and students who have graduated. We continue to keep abreast with the latest technological advances in Paediatric Audiology, gearing devices (e.g. hearing aids, cochlear implants) and assistive devices (e.g. FM, computer, and alarm systems)

Having an in-school department allows us to monitor our children's hearing closely both within CSH and in our inclusion programmes in MKG and CCPS. Workshops are
organized throughout the year to equip teachers and staff with aspects of educational audiology.

Collaboration with parents and professionals in government and private sector is on-going. Regular hearing reviews, termly visits by our pool of volunteer doctors and referrals to doctors, when necessary, for the management of external and middle ear conditions and evaluating fluctuating/deteriorating inner ear hearing levels have been crucial. Many children with mild, moderate, severe hearing losses , continue to benefit from hearing aids, from conventional analogue aids to more sophisticated aids with more advanced features e.g. noise reduction and speech processing strategies, dual-microphone technology, multiple programmes, digitally -programmed analogue to fully digital hearing aids.

Our Cochlear Implant Programme turns seven this year, since its set up in 1997. Children with profound hearing loss who derive little or limited benefits form hearing aids have benefited from this programme. Severe to -profound cases have also been good 'change-over' candidates i.e. changing from hearing aids to cochlear implant devices. As having a cochlear implant comes with pre and post implant assessments, rehabilitations, device programming, maintenance and care issues, counseling of the family is vital. Post-implant outcomes are variables, depending on e.g. the child's hearing history, individual learning ability and rates of progress, family support , learning and living environment.

We continue to strive for excellence, as a team effort with the help pf the other Support Departments and school teachers and staff, for the common good of the children placed under our care.

Parent Guidance Department

Early intervention programme.

This Year, there were 40 children in this programme. A big number of children from 2001 joined the Preschool Programme at the beginning of this year. We continue to work with parents of children from as young as 10 months to 10 years old. This year,we also saw some children who were already in mainstream schools.

Parent Guidance Programme

This year, there was an increase in the number of families in this programme. We had 92 families , compared to 75 the previous year, ranging across the school levels from Pre-Nursery to Primary 4. With the increase in the intake for preschool children, the bulk of Parent Guidance Programme also consists of families with children from this age group. There were 63 families from this group.

We started a Parents' Resource Library where parents were able to borrow books and articles that were of interest to them. New titles were introduced every term and posted on the Parents' Corner in the morning area. Parents have given positive feedback about the library. The Parents' Corner also proved popular with parents. Besides introducing new books, other materials including relevant website address, public library activities for the children , holiday projects for the children and many more.

Throughout the year, we continue to have good commitment and cooperation from the parents and we look forward to working together with them for the coming year.

Technical & Ear Mould Department

The Technical & Ear Mould Department provides services in terms of repairs and maintenance of FM system and hearing aids. With the FM systems given by MOE ( a total of 49 Transmitters and 160 Receivers) we were able to provide every child with a FM system.

Repair cost has gone up due to the introduction of higher end hearing aids but we will continue to service our students' hearing aids to the best of our abilities. The cost of Cochlear Implant (CI) Speech processor parts have also increased due to the price revision from Australia. The cost of overseas repairs and parts will go up also because of the increase in GST(5%) in 2004.

The technical department continues to look for better and cheaper batteries both for hearing aids, FM system and CI processors. We have managed to give good price for these batteries.

We continue to service our ex-students in Assumption English School St Anthony's Canossian Secondary, St Joseph Institution via visits to schools to check and repair their hearing aids , ear moulds and FM system.

We are continuing with the ear-mould Manufacturing and collaborating with City Hearing for ear mould services.
