Collaboration with parents and
professionals in government and private sector is on-going.
Regular hearing reviews, termly
visits by our pool of volunteer doctors and referrals to
doctors, when necessary, for the management of external and
middle
ear conditions and evaluating fluctuating/deteriorating inner
ear hearing levels have been crucial. Many children with
mild,
moderate, severe hearing losses , continue to benefit from
hearing aids, from conventional analogue aids to more sophisticated
aids with more advanced features e.g. noise reduction and
speech processing strategies, dual-microphone technology,
multiple programmes, digitally -programmed analogue to fully
digital hearing aids.
Our Cochlear Implant Programme turns seven this year, since
its set up in 1997. Children with profound hearing loss who
derive little or limited benefits form hearing aids
have benefited from this programme. Severe to -profound cases
have also been good 'change-over' candidates i.e. changing
from hearing aids to cochlear implant devices. As having
a
cochlear implant comes with pre and post implant assessments,
rehabilitations, device programming, maintenance and care
issues, counseling of the family is vital. Post-implant outcomes
are variables, depending on e.g. the child's hearing history,
individual learning ability and rates of progress, family
support , learning and living environment.
We continue to strive for excellence, as a team effort with
the help pf the other Support Departments and school teachers
and staff, for
the common good of the children placed under our care. |
